Summary
Making friends has never been Elise Dembowski’s strong suit. All throughout her life, she’s been the butt of every joke and the outsider in every conversation. When a final attempt at popularity fails, Elise nearly gives up. Then she stumbles upon a warehouse party where she meets Vicky, a girl in a band who accepts her; Char, a cute, yet mysterious disc jockey; Pippa, a carefree spirit from England; and most importantly, a love for DJing.
Told in a refreshingly genuine and laugh-out-loud funny voice, THIS SONG WILL SAVE YOUR LIFE is an exuberant novel about identity, friendship, and the power of music to bring people together.

Since I got involved in Booktube and started my book blog, I have become much more aware of hype and book reviews. Before, I would go to the library and spend hours searching for a book I thought I'd enjoy. I would pick books based on their covers and summaries; now I rarely buy a book without checking its Goodreads page. I love Goodreads, but sometimes I miss those days when I could just walk into a library spend the entire day looking for my next favorite book.
When I saw this book on Book Outlet, I didn't check its Goodreads page. I had never heard anything about it before, but the title, cover, and synopsis were enough to make me buy it. I am so glad I did. Going into a book without hype and expectations is amazing, and—nowadays—also very rare.
I have to admit, I was not a huge fan of the first couple chapters. I didn't like Elise, I didn't like the way she thought, and I didn't like the way I thought the story would go. I am so glad I kept reading, though, because I ended up loving it. The characters grew on me, and I loved the storyline. I saw many of my own traits on Elise. I've actually come to realize that I might have disliked her at first because I could me myself in her.
I really liked the role Elise's family played in the novel. It was not the perfect family, but they played a part in the storyline. They felt like a real, modern family. All the secondary characters were amazing, and I came to love the majority of them. I love how Elise's friendships evolved through the book.
I don't think I can really do this book justice. I also don't want to give much away, since I truly believe reading it without all the expectations made me like it more. However, I ought to say that this is an amazing book. The emotional journey Elise goes through is relatable to me. I loved to read about her passion for music and the role it played on getting her out of her shell.
I started this book thinking I would read one chapter, then go to sleep. I ended up staying up until six in the morning, juggling this book and Italian homework. Although I only got about one hour of sleep that night, I do not regret it for a second. I do, however, recommend that you do not start this book in the wee hours of the morning unless you don't mind staying up all night to finish it.
