★★★★
Summary:
If Naomi had picked tails, she would have won the coin toss.
She wouldn’t have had to go back for the yearbook camera, and she wouldn’t have hit her head on the steps. She wouldn’t have woken up in an ambulance with amnesia.
She certainly would have remembered her boyfriend, Ace. She might even have remembered why she fell in love with him in the first place.
She would understand why her best friend, Will, keeps calling her “Chief.”
She’d know about her mom’s new family.
She’d know about her dad’s fiancée.
She never would have met James, the boy with the questionable past and the even fuzzier future, who tells her he once wanted to kiss her. She wouldn’t have wanted to kiss him back.
But Naomi picked heads.

The blurb for this book (which is the summary above) is perfection. It is a bit dramatic, but doesn't it just make you want to read it? Job well done. I also really like how the cover looks very different from most YA book covers. It is very aesthetically pleasing, and I can tell the designer put a lot of thought into it.
The characters are very realistic; they have their flaws, but are still likable. The MC's actions, in particular, are ill-considered, but I can still understand why she does those things. Naomi is trying to find herself, and separating her new life from her past one seems like the best way to do it.
Naomi treats her old best friend, Will, really badly. He is very sweet and always tries to help her, but she doesn't care. She lies to him for no good reason and doesn't give him the time of day. It was hard to see (read) someone that obviously loves her be crushed by her sudden amnesia-induced indifference.
However, like I said, I understand Naomi. Although I have never been in her position, I could perfectly imagine how hard it must be to be told to love someone you don't remember.
One thing I really liked was how Naomi goes through three different love interests. It is more realistic than most other books, especially since it treats young relationships as something that comes and goes. I think the relationship with each of the boys is developed just right, and to the extent needed by the story. I specially like how her last relationship is left open-ended so the reader can imagine what they like.
Perhaps the only thing that I truly disliked about this book was the way Naomi acts toward her mom and her new family. It is almost like she makes an effort to keep her (old) bad relationships intact, but get out of her good ones (meaning her relationship with Will). She is upset with her mother for something she does not remember, something that no longer affects her life. But, like I said, I can understand why she is still upset with her after the accident. What I hated how she did not even apologize for how she treated them. They have no heart-to-heart conversation about it, and I truly wish they had.
Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac deals with a girl trying to discover herself, and in the process teaches you the importance to do so as well. It gives you the chance to ask yourself what you would do if you were in Naomi's position. How would you want other people to see you? How would you want to see yourself? Would you do anything differently?
